ABSE operates under the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge, and Plan S. We believe that publicly funded research should be publicly available and reusable, accelerating discovery and innovation across disciplines.

License and Copyright

All articles in ABSE are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. This permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are properly credited.

Author Rights

Authors retain full copyright of their work while granting ABSE the right to publish and disseminate their article. Authors are free to:

No additional permissions are required to reproduce content from ABSE under the CC BY license.

Access and Reuse Policy

All ABSE articles are accessible in full text immediately upon publication. Users are entitled to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts without prior permission. The open-access policy applies to all content published in the journal, including research articles, reviews, editorials, and supplementary materials.

Archiving and Preservation

To guarantee perpetual access, ABSE ensures content preservation through partnerships with Portico, LOCKSS, and SHERPA/RoMEO. Each article receives a DOI through CrossRef to provide permanent identification and citation tracking. All metadata are publicly harvestable through the journal’s OAI-PMH endpoint.

Open Data and Research Transparency

ABSE encourages authors to share data, code, and supplementary material in public repositories consistent with the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Datasets should include DOIs or permanent identifiers for reproducibility and citation. Where appropriate, data availability statements are included within the article.

Publication Costs

To sustain the open-access model, authors may be required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) after acceptance. APCs cover editorial management, peer review, production, digital hosting, DOI registration, and long-term archiving. Waivers and discounts are available for authors from low-income regions or under special circumstances (see Waiver Policy).

Ethical and Legal Compliance

ABSE’s open-access policies comply with major indexing services and funder mandates, including those of the European Commission, NIH, Wellcome Trust, and Research Councils UK. The journal adheres to COPE and ICMJE ethical guidelines to ensure responsible research dissemination.
